What's New at TOLVAC TOLVAC Elects 2010 Officers - 1/28/2010 This week, TOLVAC held its Annual Meeting where Line and Administrative officers for 2010 were elected. This year's officers are as follows:
CPAP Capability Added - Successful First Use - 12/10/2009 TOLVAC has placed in service C-PAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) devices on all of our paramedic units. The devices are manufactured by the Boussignac Company out of Buffalo, New York. The device is very simple to use and is designed to aid patients in severe respiratory distress. One major intended outcome of C-PAP use is a reduction in the need for endotracheal (ET) intubation and mechanical ventilation. Intubation is a procedure which carries a significant risk of complications for respiratory patients and usually greatly lengthens thier hospital stay. A study in Houston, Texas found that C-PAP use reduced the placement of ET tubes and/or other adjuncts in serious respiratory distress cases by almost 60%. Of over 1,700 study patients receiving the C-PAP treatment, only 10 ended up requiring intubation. Thats a remarkable 99.5% success rate! TOLVAC used its C-PAP system for the first time last week on a patient presenting in severe respiratory distress with tri-poding, auxillary muscle use, and an O2 saturation of 76%. Receiving the C-PAP treatment over the nine mile distance to our local hospital, the patient reported relief and entered the ED with an O2 saturation of 92-93%. The patient did not require any advanced airway placement. Not only is this device simple to use, but it is also disposable to eliminate any possibility of cross contamination. The results of our first use are in line with the Houston study and we look forward to future use of the C-PAP system to help our patients and make thier hospital stay shorter and less invasive. Currently TOLVAC is the only ALS service in Sullivan County operating with C-PAP and one of only a few in the Hudson Valley Region. We hope that by sharing our information other services will look into these devices to the benefit of their patients as well.
New Look for TOLVAC - 12/10/2009 Members of the community will soon see something different about the TOLVAC members who come to thier aid; new uniforms have arrived at TOLVAC! After many years we have chosen to depart from our traditional green pants and shirts. It has become increasingly difficult to find a supplier of our green uniform pants so we have decided to take advantage of the situation and give our crews a "face lift". Our new uniforms consist of black uniform pants and white polo shirts with an emroidered five color logo on the breast. Our traditional green and gold remain as the primary colors of the logo. The new uniforms have begun being distributed to all of our members and will soon be the primary attire for our duty crews. We hope this new look will lend a sharper, more professional look to our crews and we hope you will think the same when you see them! You can continue to expect the same quick, competent, and compassionate care from our crews, even if they do not arrive in the same green attire you have come to know.
