Equipment

In order to maintain our goal of providing the highest level of care, TOLVAC has to have an enormous amount of specialized equipment.  Some of this equipment includes:

Each ambulance is set up with it's own set of ALS level equipment in addition to our three fully equipped paramedic fly cars.  All TOLVAC ambulances have monitor defibrillators capable of pacing and manual defibrillation.  These monitors use the same pads as our paramedic units and are therefore interchangeable, offering a higher level of protection in the event of an MCI or equipment failure.  The ambulances also have all the materials necessary to start IVs, draw bloods, and intubate a patient to protect their airway should that become necessary.  These built in redundancies allow for us to be able to treat multiple patients at the same time.

Our paramedic fly cars have monitors capable of acquiring, interpreting, and transmitting 12-lead ECGs, an important factor in patients having chest pain.  The information from these monitors can then be forwarded to the emergency room should that be required.  We recently have added waveform capnography capability to our paramedic fly cars so that our vehicles meet and exceed the requirements of regional protocols.  In addition, we have added CPAP capability to our paramedic units.  Click here to learn more about our CPAP capability.

One of our ambulances, unit 2019, is set up as a first in MCI vehicle.  It has two multi-channel 50 watt radios, a complete MCI kit, extra backboards, straps, head immobilizers, and cervical collars so that there will be a substantial amount of trauma at the scene on arrival of the first due unit.  Portable radios are available for on scene communications.  The vehicle is also equipped with an erasable board and markers so that any necessary tracking can be documented.  In coordination with this unit, each of our three other ambulances carry at least four complete trauma immobilization set-ups so that TOLVAC can properly immobilize up to 24 patients before mutual aid equipment is needed.

In order to maximize our crews' efforts and minimalize injury potential, each of our four ambulances is equipped with Stryker Stair Pro tracked stair chairs and Stryker Power Pro electric/hydraulic stretchers.  These have proven to be very reliable units and back injuries in our corps have become virtually non-existent.  The added weight capacity of these devices has also proven to be extremely helpful in a number of cases.

Each of our paramedic fly cars and our first due ambulances are also equipped with GPS units to aid in speedy response to calls both inside and outside of our primary district.  Digital cameras in the paramedic fly cars allow us to quickly and easily document on scene conditions to share with emergency room staff as well as provide for better training and QI after calls.

Over the years we have gone from rather basic first aid equipment to some of the most sophisticated items available.  As new products are developed and brought to the market we will evaluate them and place in service those that will enhance performance of our personnel and ensure we continue to provide the highest level of care possible.
